Great thread ! I've read that Nathan Knorr once said that if he'd not wound up being in charge of the WT he would of seen himself as CEO of a large department store or something of the kind. He ran a tight ship with a view to expansion. Also was not sure of the 1975 promotion but he went along with it for thew sake of corporate growth.

Motivations for Watchtower leadership
by GetMeOutofHere ini’ve struggled for some time with this question.
why would the elders, cos, branch committee, helpers to gb and the gb themselves devote their lives to progressing in the organization, if the whole thing is one big sham?
i have 3 ideas so far.. 1) money.

Living in the Québec Laurentians and being mid fifties I have witnessed a huge transformation in our climate. Rainstorms in winter, flooding and unprecedented heat waves. Reliance on AC and seasonal shifts.
Urban sprawl in my area is unreal as well.
So yes it's a concern of mine and I do my best to avoid being wasteful and recycle where I can. Mind you Québec is years behind the rest of the country in recycling glass, cardboard, plastics etc.
It's seems it's all good until it's right in your own backyard.

Money! How much did you "Contribute" To The WTB@TS When You Were A Member
by The Bethelite ini was in full time service for six years including bethel.
once i got out of bethel, i figured i had already given them six of the best years of my life (ages 18-24) working as a slave/drone in their factory, so i rationalized that i had given them enough... so over the next 27 years i would say maybe $200 bucks is it.
i think their whole "voluntary contributions" idea is biting them in the ass, because over all jehovah's witnesses are a cheap group people with a few exceptions.

50 a month at the hall I attended and two company cheques for 750 ea. for hall builds / renovations. 35 per convention and approx 20 each time I went to the assembly hall.
I was in and active about 8 years, burned myself out ( easily manipulated )
When I was full in in '00-'03 at my first hall up north in the Laurentians we were a young and dynamic group that bumped up the membership over 80 for a while. Their finances had never been so good. Eventually it dissipated and I'd guess at last half of us are now completely gone, faded DF or DA. Last I heard they are barely hanging on at 40 people.
Try to control people and treat them like crap that's what you get..

Who really is the faithful and discreet* slave whom his master appointed over his domestics, to give them their food at the proper time?
by Alex Williams inthis statement was answered in a form of a question to a question posed by one of his followers;.
jesus realized that composite slave had to qualify for such an appointment when he came into power of his kingdom promised by jehovah god.
[and they came to life and ruled as kings with the christ+ for 1,000 years].

Here's a copy paste from Don Cameron :
The basic approach "Captives of a Concept" takes is to compare two things about the Watchtower Society:
(1) Their interpretation of Matthew 24:45-47 as explained in their book "God's Kingdom of a Thousand Years Has Approached"
(2) The organization's history that relates to their interpretation as explained in their book "Jehovah's Witnesses - Proclaimers of God's Kingdom."
"Captives of a Concept" doesn't try to show that their interpretation of Matthew 24:45-47 does not agree with the Bible. Rather, that it doesn't agree with what actually went on in the organization's history.
The reason why it is so important to realize this fact is because the organization's claim to being "God's organization" today requires that their interpretation of Matthew 24:45-47 and their history agree with each other. But they don't agree.
The reason why there are millions of Jehovah's Witnesses today is not because they all DID make the above comparison before they got baptized but rather because they all did NOT make it. The book refers to this fact as "The One Mistake All Jehovah's Witnesses Have Made."
"Captives of a Concept" does not make this mistake. It very carefully makes the above comparison, which then makes it difficult to believe that God has ever had anything to do with the Watchtower Society.
Once Raymond Franz finally made the above comparison (in 1979) He concluded the following: "It would be an insult to Christ Jesus to say that he selected the Society on the basis of what it had been teaching as of 1919."
One would need to make the same comparison to appreciate why he felt that way.

Alex, if you have a moment take a look at this or at the very least read the reviews. PS : As a convert I disassociated myself after 10 years in. The integrity and honesty I was looking for is simply not there, sorry.

Why Did You Stay In The JW Religion As Long As You Did?
by minimus inwere you so indoctrinated that you just couldn’t leave?
was it due to family pressure?
was it your friendships that you didn’t want to lose?

Shall I disassociate myself too? I’m the only one left now.
by Theonlyoneleft inplease bear with me as this might be a long one,.
the question above has been circulating my mind for a while and i’ve been wondering if there’s anyone that thought the same or done it.. we normally associate shunning and disassociation with jehovah’s witnesses that are normally baptised, but my situation is a reversed one.. i was a bible student that left a long time ago on my own free will, never shunned never ostracised by my jw’s siblings and their families.
the years have passed and situations have arisen that has made me uncomfortable of the knowledge of particular outcomes within my siblings and families.. i’ve been thinking to stay away from my family( living in a different country ), as i don’t want to be preached on or feel out of touch and segregated by their opinions of me and my family.

If You Criticize A Person of Color Are You A Racist?
by minimus inseriously, it’s getting to a point that you can’t make a negative comment about someone without being charged as a racist, homophobe or sexist!
if you criticize a female, you are obviously sexist.
if you criticize someone who happens to be gay, you must hate homosexuals.

Punk of Nice :
" Racist' is one of those 'shut you down' words. It can be used wrongly "
The word is ' thought stopping ' .The JW use this ammo in their arguments All The Time . Steven Hassan has brought this out numerous times, good point.

When should you Disassociate yourself?
by happytobefree ini have been having discussion with my sister (relative), who is an active witness, about writing a letter of disassociation.
the reason being is that i have not attended the meetings in over a year and it's been 4 years since i have went out in the jw ministry.. i going to try to sum this topic up.
my sister think that i should not da myself because i have not done any immoral act in her thinking.

DA here too : They made me DA from Catholic church, so I DA'ed from jw. Simple and in your face out in the open for all to see. I did nothing wrong either, didn't want to be associated with the bad reputation of the Watchtower and their controlling never ending closed loop freedom and thought robbing BS
